Indonesian, Muslim fashion designer, Anniesa Hasibuan made history at the New York Fashion Week as the first ever designer to include hijabs with every outfit worn by models on the runway.
As she brought out her Spring/Summer 2017 Collection, D'Jakarta, she delighted the crowds of fashionistas with her gorgeous range of flowing trousers and skirts. Her garments were created using silk, chiffon, and lace fabrics in a variety of soft pastels. A favorite amongst the audience was an intricate gold, lace dress adorned with a metallic embroidery detail along the bust and a fringed lace train.
Each of the models donned a hijab with their outfits, either in gold, dove gray, or pale pink. Her show is, in fact, the first show featured at the New York Fashion Week to have hijabs worn by every model on the catwalk, and a first for Indonesia.
Hasibuan also made history for her country, being the first Indonesian fashion designer to feature her collections at the New York Fashion Week. She says that her designs were inspired by her environment around her in the city of Jakarta where she lives and runs her boutique.
Models strutted a collection of glamorous evening gowns and a ready-to-wear collection for the upcoming season. Following the success of her first ever show at New York Fashion Week, Hasibuan took to the runway and received a standing ovation!
Reviews on Hasibuan's collections mention how she brings together the perfect elements from her culture and combines them with the western culture to create "a beautiful harmony of fashion and modesty." Fans took to social media to express their views by commenting with "absolutely breathtaking" and "this was everything!"
Hasibuan said: "I am so proud and thankful for everyone on the team who helped me so this event could happen." She did not realize that she would see such amazing results and was both thrilled and humbled by the reaction. Hasibuan has previously shown her collections in major fashion capitals including London and Paris, but this was her first show in the U.S.
